Homework

I will begin assigning weekly homework on Mondays. Students have the week to complete the work. There will not be a lot of work to complete and students can work at their own pace, selecting convenient or free evening to get it done.

Homework will include a weekly ReadWorks assignment and some language and/or math activity online. Some chosen work will be intentional to support their learning in other subject areas. Some weeks, homework will be focused or linked to holidays, celebrations, cultural events, discussion points, topics of student interest. Students will find the assigned work in Google Classroom under the heading Homework for Mrs Brown.

Other work posted on Google Classroom during the week is to support learners who are stuck at home due to illness or because their family is awaiting Covid test results. If your child is too sick to do the work, please do not have them work. If they are well enough, they are encouraged to check Language and Math in Google Classroom to see what we are doing that day or week in class. I understand that there are more absences this year.

Some of the writing and math homework activities will also be for the purposes of being able to collaborate and connect socially in ways that we cannot do in class this year due to Covid regulations. Group work is not possible and learning from each other through smaller group discussions is difficult with spacing and masks. Even sharing ideas out loud in class is difficult as students are spaced far from each other and have difficulty hearing each other through their masks. Students will be able to interact more with each other through online discussions and collaborations.

I strongly encourage students to get some times out of doors daily. They are on computers and screens more often now to accommodate efforts in paper-free and hands off learning. Students are limited in their interactions and physical activity at school and I am cognisant that they need to fulfill these needs after school now more than ever.
